What's your process? Longhand or keyboard? Fast or slow? What's it like when you're starting a new project? Do you think of the characters first, the story, the setting, or does it all come at once?

Keyboard. I'm a pretty fast typist and that's the only way I can keep up with how fast my mind moves. Most of the time the story is complete in my head before I sit down to write it, though I often flesh out certain things as I type. Right now, I'm probably backed up about ten novels in my head. The PC has been a huge boon to me as far as being able to make easy revisions.

Heh. Well, when I'm actually writing, I use the keyboard. Until about ten years ago, I wrote in longhand, but then my tendonitis got pretty bad, had to go through physical therapy and gave that up (still have tendonitis, though, so go figure...).

When it's going well, it's fast, and when it's going really well, it's almost like a natural high, especially when I'm totally in love with the story.

I think it all depends on what the story is as to what comes first. So, I say, any and all of the above.

Generally, though, ideas start to come to me when I'm trying to fall asleep. I do a lot of hashing out then.

I seem to do a lot of my original composition in longhand, though I compose on the keyboard too. It's just that sometimes it won't happen until I get away from the keyboard & park myself someplace with a notebook and a pen. I carry manuscripts around with me and revise them over lunch, or at home. I also read over the thing on the computer and make minor edits as I go.
