Is it really as formulaic as all that? Do readers really want ALL Vampire books to be so predictable? Or is that just what the marketing people say?

And what kind of 2 timing romantic hero loves both a vampire and a werewolf? Oh well, dramatic conflict.

I have found that many of them are as formulaic as bodice-ripping romance novels. And even the ones that start out with promise seem to drift in that direction.

Hmm, reminiscent of Orwell's vision of novels being churned out on assembly lines in 1984

Not as bad as all that. I think somethings just have formulas I guess. And I suppose if they were really snappily written, the formula would show so much or I wouldn't care. I think to really shine you have to know how to take the expected formula and have fun with it. I recently read a book called Sunshine, that I thought did a nice job of that. I do get a little tired of these trampy heroines that can't make up their minds. I think I'd have to go with the live guy even if he did turn into a wolf.

Okay, a scene is coming to me. A disheveled heroine with a rather large wolf on a leash and a love-struck vampire and...
"You don't love me. You're dead. You think you love me. It's like when people who lose limbs still feel pain in them. You've got it all over, vestigal feeling of being alive. But you aren't alive. You're a confused corpse who thinks he's alive."
The wolf growls and bares his teeth at the vampire...
"Heel George! Heel! You want to wake up tomorrow naked in cage?"

I love it.

I don't know why, but it reminds me of when Lestat said to Louis in Interview with a Vampire, "Oh that. You're just dying. Take no notice, it'll all be over soon."

Poor Louis. Lestat gets all the attention.

I think Anne Rice had a crush on Lestat.
